Video games as a form of leisure and entertainment play a massive part in culture and enjoyment. It involves the mastery of navigating challenges and achieving a sense of accomplishment. it also means having freedom and control over our actions in the game, as well as the added opportunity to connect and socialize with other players. Video games can however alter our state of consciousness, it is a possibility that we may become absorbed in the game world, experiencing a state of complete focus and enjoyment. 


Video games are as much fun as they are, it has many surprising benefits. It improves cognitive skills games that involve action adventures can improve visual attention and problem-solving, It can improve social skills where it is observed that in a multiplayer setting, it can foster teamwork, communication, and leadership. Games also provide a safe space to practice managing emotions in challenging situations. 

It is no surprising feat that video games have become an undeniable force captivating billions worldwide. There are psychological factors that help one to understand the psychology of gaming this is observed when a game often presents a series of challenges that require us to hone our skills and strategize. This process triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, creating a powerful sense of accomplishment. Games also offer a level of control over our actions and choices within the virtual world where it is possible to customize characters, explore environments at our own pace, and make decisions that impact the narrative. The rise of multiplayer games has seen a thriving virtual social space where these games allow us to connect with others, collaborate towards common goals, and forge meaningful bonds.



Video games may have a lot of benefits. It is however important to know that it does have its disadvantages and shortcomings. It can lead to a distorted perception of time. This state can be delightful as it temporarily escapes daily worries and anxieties. Even negative emotions elicited by games, like fear or frustration, can be strangely stimulating and contribute to the overall gaming experience. In extreme cases, gaming can become compulsive which would then lead to addiction. When gaming begins to interfere with daily responsibilities, relationships, and overall well-being, it can be a cause for concern. Excessive gaming can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of obesity, and heart disease. The stimulating nature of games can lead to sleep disruption because the blue light emitted from screens can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings. Intense or prolonged gaming sessions can lead to repetitive strain injuries (RSI) in wrists, hands, and arms due to repetitive motions and awkward postures.

Video games can be very addictive and harmful if abused extremely which is why it is important to adopt a balanced approach that can lead to a few healthy gaming habits 

There has however been ongoing research on the potential link between violent video games and increased aggression in some players. While the exact cause-and-effect relationship remains under debate, it's an important area of study for understanding potential negative impacts. 

Practicing moderation is a way where one can set time limits and stick to them. This helps prioritize sleep, exercise, and social interaction for better wellbeing.


It is important to be mindful of the kind of games one is playing and to also be mindful of its content, especially for younger players. It is better to opt for games that promote positive values like cooperation and problem-solving. Open Communication is very important for children and teens regarding healthy gaming habits and potential risks Encourage open communication about their gaming experiences, by acknowledging the potential downsides and steps towards responsible gaming gaming can therefore be a positive and enriching experience for individuals of all ages.
